Why do some hairs jump out at the laser?

I had my first session of laser hair removal yesterday on my legs, underarms and 'Hollywood' bikini, using the Diode Lightsheer laser. I have pale skin and dark, thick hair. Some of the hairs on my bikini area jumped out from beneath the surface of the skin immediately after being targeted by the laser. The technician pointed these out and said it was "a good sign", but she wasn't able to provide me with a scientific explanation as to why this happens. Does anyone know WHY some hairs jump out from beneath the skin at the laser? Does this mean that those hairs will be permanently disabled? If so, will they be the ONLY ones that have been permanently disabled this time? Any info/ideas will be most appreciated. Thanks! x
