Is it possible the equipment back then was not as advanced as today, or attributed more to operator-error, i.e., unskilled people using too high settings, not understanding what skin types are best suited for this treatment, etc.? I ran into an acquaintance last week who had a huge black+blue bruise that covered her cheek area. Is that also a possible side effect? I've never seen that before.
