Does the spot size of the laser matter for Tattoo Removal?

There has been some conversation regarding the spot size (width of the laser beam) used during tattoo removal. It has been said (based on what I have read and asking my technician -  I am not an expert) that the larger the spot size the more effective the treatment as it allows for more effective penetration depth of the laser which targets the deeper and dense ink. It has also been said to make for a faster treatment as a larger area of the tattoo can be treated at one time (great for larger tattoos). If you have spoken to your technician/Doctor about this would be interesting for you to share what you have learned.
