This forum was so helpful to me before my surgery; for all of us, the fear of the unknown is what is so daunting so I hope my few tips can help someone out there:I'll spare you the details; my story parallels so many here. I had my surgery Monday; today is Friday and I have felt great all week.BEFORE SURGERY:I had been working out regularly. A strong core, ab muscles and arms will help you. I bought 2 "L" shaped pillows from Bed Bath & Beyond as well as a "wedge" for my bed. This had made sleeping on my back incredibly comfortable. I bought gauze, Extra Strength Tylenol, Miralax (packets), magnesium citrate. Got my prescription filled beforehand (I requested Vicodin/Tylenol w/codeine).I quit drinking all alcohol about 5 days pre-op and on Saturday and Sunday followed a "low residue" diet. https://www.hss.edu/files/Your-Diet-and-Preparing-...This will increase your ability to tolerate anesthesia without nausea. I had zero nausea and still have had none. I also followed this diet the first few days after (not hard to do because appetite not very big). AFTER SURGERY:When I was taking the medicine with codeine, I had a Miralax with ginger-ale after about an hour. On Wednesday I mixed 4 oz. magnesium citrate with ginger-ale instead of the Miralax. While the meds are great, they do slow your intestines down and you need to be proactive to avoid a stoppage. I finally was able to go on Thursday (had not since Sunday)...another reason that light diet is a good idea! I bought a few inexpensive stretchy hook-in-the front bras (the kind we've never been able to wear) before surgery. Was able to shower with my drains hooked onto those like a little jacket. I just got my drains out today; be flexible; it's much better to have them in than not if you are still draining a lot. They were little more than an annoyance; removal did not hurt at all and I have been off all pain meds (including XS Tylenol) for 2 days. Make sure you know if your prescription paid meds already have Tylenol (acetaminophen) in them so you don't take additional Tylenol on top of it. That could result in a toxic overdose. While it's important to get up and move around, make sure to listen to your body and sleep/rest when you need to. Make sure you have people around to help you. I have been surprised in the amount of arm movement and range of motion I have had since the first day. I washed my hair in the sink Tuesday (with help) and was able to shower Thursday and today (Friday) with Dr.'s permission. Best wishes to you! I hope it goes well and that you are as happy as I am even though the girls look a little rough with bruising, glue, tape, etc. on them. This has already been such a great move for me and I love how I look even in my pajamas and tent-like tops I always wore. Can't wait to get some things tailored and buy some better fitting tops!
