Hello,
I'm 49 years old, and have a mild to moderate underbite. I don't have other issues though, like TMJ or sleeping apnea, except a higher than normal wearness of my molar teeth, and also some gum retraction on my lower front teeth because they naturaly have leaned back to get closer to my upper front teeth.
So, I was observed by a maxillofacial surgeon and I'm pondering if I should undergo a surgery to correct my underbite. According to the surgeon, if I don't have corrective surgery, there is a risk that I will have health problems such TMJ, broken teeth, etc.
There are people who underwent the surgery for aesthetic reasons or/and because they had pain problems. But my case is a little different, as it would be only to antecipate possible future problems.
The truth is, I don't know what is the probability of getting some of those problems. ANd there is also the risk of getting real problems during the pre and post orthodontic treatments and/or from the surgery itself.
Doing the surgery demands a preparation of wearing brackets or invisalign for 2 or 3 years to position the teeth, plus, after the surgery, around 1 year of more brackets for the final tuning position. And, of course, the surgery will require a few months of recovery and bad mood...
Considering all of this, what are your advices?
