Can orthodontists give you elastics doubled up?

So I got elastics today, when they were put on it was one hook on the top and two either side underneath creating a triangle, I took them of for the first time earlier today to eat dinner and when I tried to put them back on normally they felt incredibly loose, I tried new ones and the felt the same, they also looked much thinner than before, so I assumed they had been doubled up when my orthodontist put them on, so I doubled them and the felt the same and looked how they previously did, however lots of people are saying never double them up as it causes all these problems etc. Can the orthodontist give them to you doubled up? that's what it seems like they did but I honestly cant remember what they said. Its the weekend now so we cant contact them until Monday at which point we will ring them and ask, but does anyone have any advice? Can they be given to you doubled up?
