Can you use Retin A gel under eyes?

I have been using the 0.01 Retin A gel for about 4 weeks now for acne. I have heard you can use it under your eyes for anti aging purposes and that it can help thicken the skin but can you do that with the gel or only the cream? The reason I ask is because the gel has alcohol in it and I've heard that alcohol is really bad for your skin and given that the under eye is so delicate I don't want to do any damage....Thanks for any help!
