Labiaplasty: The Pros and Cons

More about Labiaplasty

With the increase of Labiaplasty in recent years I wanted to point out some pros and cons to think about before making a date with the surgeon.

The Labiaplasty procedure involves reducing the size of the Labia Minora (inner lips) so they are smaller than the Labia Majora (outer lips). Although most women elect to have this surgery for cosmetic reason, it is sometimes performed for psychological or health reasons.

Your first step is to set up a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss the procedure and any potential risks that may come with the surgery.
The procedure itself is usually performed under a general anesthetic but can be done under a local anesthetic.

Labiaplasty Advantages
No doubt that if everything goes well that the main advantage of Labiaplasty is an increased level of self confidence and comfort during sexual intercourse. Some women may also report a decrease in discomfort in clothing.

Labiaplasty Disadvantages
The most common and well-studied Labiaplasty is the reduction of the Labia minora (inner lips). There are different methods for this procedure and the results vary greatly based on what method is used. The Trim method, which is when the doctor cuts off the excess skin is associated with far more pain and downtime than the wedge methods.

One of the main disadvantages of Labiaplasty is the cost of the procedure. In certain countries such as Canada or the UK some women are able to have the operation performed under their health care plan if they can prove that the operation is for health reasons and not cosmetic. The surgery can cost anywhere from $3000 upwards depending on your individual needs.

The surgery is generally safe according to the  doctors on site,  however there are always health risks which can include an infection following surgery, bleeding, excessive pain, painful urination, broken sutures.  Risks can also depend on the technique performed resulting in slight asymmetry or too much of the labia removed.
